Ancient
Arkansas Ancestors not only tells the story of the rich archaeological history in
northeast Arkansas, it begins 12,000 years ago when humans began moving into North America
and continues through the colonial period. The complete cultural chronology from Paleo-
through colonial period is represented. The exhibits convey how a complex society with
sophisticated tools, ceramics and horticultural skills developed.Another component of Ancient Arkansas
Ancestors is the story of site recovery and site destruction. Site recovery refers to the
scientific methods of collecting archaeological materials for research. Site destruction
occurs from random digging by treasure hunters or inadvertent destruction through
construction or farming.
